I know this has probably been asked several times on WindowsBBS but I don't know where. Since this is the XP forum and not a report some guy wrote on the web, I would like to ask the question here.

Knowing my past history on my account, I have used Sygate. I did a reinstall of XPSP3 and I wonder if I need to install a software firewall like Sygate. I spend most of my time on my school network. When I am home, I use the router hardware firewall.

I understand XP firewall does not manage outgoing traffic.

Is windows firewall good enough for me or do I need to install a software firewall?

I'll be interested to hear the replies on this one, as I'm wondering the same thing.

My 2 pence (cents) worth - use both, especially on XP and I recommend Comodo - freeware.

Two way protection is vital. Suggest giving "Counter Spy" a trial.

Never come across that scenario before and I have installed Comodo on several others without issues.

I would uninstall it and reinstall from a fresh download.

    Maybe

Do you think I may need to add something to the safe list?

I would not think so - I certainly haven't done so.

    No Comodo

Well Comodo does not work for me. What is the next best firewall I should try that is free for XP and rated good?

Like Pete I have not had issues with COMODO!

It may be a malware protection program (or even malware) or the Antivirus.

If not there are other issues at work here!

    Response

Not to criticize Pete. I have used zonealarm free and pro in the past. I was not impressed with it. So I ask my question again. What is the next best firewall I should try that is free for XP and rated good?

I think you have another underlaying issue!

It would be better to persue that!

    Want to?

    If so.

Is this the same computer/OS that had Zone Alarm?

Has it now or ever had a Norton/Symantec or Mcafee product installed?

    What resident Virus scanner?

What Malware prevention programs are running on boot? Spybot TeaTimer etc?

    Helped

Well I followed this guys directions and DISABLED leak protection and now it runs faster. I do notice though that I have a slower start up, but that is probably normal for all firewalls. Thank you, Pete

Just curious, is it safe to have IDefense and leak protection disabled. Willl I still be protected by the firewall? Do I even need this? Just curious.
