    I have an HP Omnibook, with Win 98se .. Recently bought HP PSC 750(Print/scan/copy) ... Couldn't open scanned pic's as jpegs... Pop-up said XPCOM.DLL could not be found ! I downloaded xpcom.xpi which didn't help ! Then downloaded Netscp6.2 ..... Now, I get pop-up .....
"The Netscp6 exe file is linked to missing export XPCOM.DLL?GetBuffer@nsCString@@QBEPBDXZ"
    ...... AND .... another popup .....
"C:\ProgramFiles\Netscape\Netscape6\netscp6.exe ...... A device attached to the system is not functioning" .......
Now it seems I'm unable to uninstall Netscape6 or the xpcom.xpi ........ What have I done wrong ? What can I do now ?

    Pappy,

Welcome to the board! I'm sure that Ramona will be along soon to help, but I'll give you a place to start. Here is a page from her web site that deals with the XPCOM.DLL problem that you have. Give it a try a see what happens.

Also, I would suggest Netscape 7.x rather then 6.x. 6 still has problems, but 7 runs pretty good. I have been using it awhile and have not had any problems. But, we need to get 6 uninstalled first.

Here are some instructions for a clean install of Netscape 6 or 7. Follow all the instructions and let's see how you come out.

    Hi Pappy,

I see that Mike has given you a warm welcome to the Netscape Forum, and the Board! Let me add mine, and Welcome!

A few things you can try, in order to troubleshoot your XPCOM.DLL crashes:

The best option is to create a new profile with the Profile Manager. Most xpcom.dll problems are individual profile problems.

Before creating a new Profile, there are a few other options to try first:

    Close Netscape
    Open Windows Explorer
    Browse to your profile directory
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt
    (depending on your OS)

    Delete the following files:
    netscape.hst
    history.dat
    history.mab
    panacea.dat
    Cache folder
    chrome folder
All msf files in \Mail\ and \News\
    Then restart Netscape 6

If no joy, then you should consider
    Creating a new Profile

What happened when you tried to uninstall Netscape 6? Did you receive an error, and can you post it here please. Did you use the Add/Remove applet when you tried to uninstall Netscape 6?

Let us know, so we can help you solve your problem, and thanks!

Thanks much for the warm welcomes - TRULY APPRECIATED !!
My first desire would be to totally delete / uninstall ALL having to do with Netscape - and start over from scratch ! As noted, when I attempt to uninstall Netscape, I receive the two msgs which I quoted in my initial post ! Following Ramonas suggestions I am NOT able to locate Netscape. hst ((Possible "operator malfunction" - centainly not intentiional !!) Must add . . . frustrations are increasing , along with "adult" verbal expletives !!

    Hi Pappy,

I hear your frustration, and hoping we will be able to help you out of this situation.

Make a backup copy of your existing Netscape 6 Profile. Copy the entire Profiles Folder, then paste it into another Folder on your HD. You might just want to creat a "Backup" folder beforehand, so you can use it in the future. Once you have copied and pasted the Profiles Folder into the Backup folder:

    Delete the mozver.dat file
You can either do a "Find" or locate it in C:\WINDOWS

    Delete:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 6 Folder
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla Folder

    (Depending on your OS)

    Delete these Registry Keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla
    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Mozilla
    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Netscape\Netscape 6
    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu\&Programs\Netscape 6

If you are uncomfortable working in the Registry, then skip the above. If you decide to delete the keys, then Back Up the Registry first.

    REBOOT YOUR PC

If you're overdue for ScanDisk and Defrag, now is a good time.

    Download sites for 7.01:
    Netscape Streamline - SillyDog701
    Netscape Compact - Holger Metzger
These two versions are under 15 MB.

Install the updated version, using the "Custom Install ", in order to deselect unwanted components, i.e., Instant Messenger, Mail, and additional components like Macromedia Flash Play, RealPlayer, WinAmp, etc. It's much better to install the Players separately, if you want them. The "Custom Install" gives you much more control over the program.

Open the Profile Manager and create a NEW Profile, entering a NEW PROFILE NAME.

Following these Creating a New Profile guidelines may be helpful to you.

Once you have Netscape 7.01 up and running, for a few days, then it will be safe to delete the OLD Netscape 6 Profile. You will, of course, want to back up your NEW Netscape 7.01 Profile frequently, and certainly before deleting the Netscape 6 Profile.

You aren't going 'round the bend, not being able to find the netscape.hst file. It won't be there unless you converted Profiles from Netscape 4.7x.

Please post back if this isn't perfectly clear, and you have any questions. I think I heard some of those expletives...;)

    Guess I better re-do my profile . . . . . .leave "Beginner" delete "Intermediate" !!!!!!
Must confess I don't fully understand all your instructions but, will try to download 7.1 ............... When I attempt to uninstall current Netscape , I get a msg that says ..... Error 161 ..... "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\[Product Current Verson]\Uninstall\Uninstall Log Folder" ( I really don't want to contribute this fine HP laptop, to our nations space program, by throwing it out the window !)

    Pappy,

By all means, go ahead and download Netscape 7.01.

I wouldn't bother with a new Profile. You really need to get rid of Netscape 6.

If Netscape 6 isn't in your Add/Remove, then you will have to uninstall manually, per the instructions in the earlier post. It is rather lengthy, but I think if you take it one step at a time, it will go surprisingly smoothly.

Since you are a beginner, disregard the Registry deletions.

Just another thought, did you install Netscape 6 with the online installer, or did you download the full program and then install it offline?

Sometimes when unable to uninstall a program, installing it again, over the existing version, will enable uninstallation. Does that make sense to you? I'm not certain this will help in your case, but you have nothing to lose.

    Hi Pappy,

Good going! So I guess the manual uninstall of Netscape 6.2 went without a hitch?

Bad news on the power going out! We are having a snow storm in my part of the country, but guess that's not your problem.

Let us know if you have more questions!

    Pappy,

Good news on getting Netscape 7 downloaded! I knew Ramona would be able to help you out. Don't worry about the uninstall of 6. If you follow Ramona's instruction, there won't be a problem. I was hesitant the first time also, but it went just fine. Look forward to hearing more success from you.

    Mike
