The compression in XP's native ZIP folders stinks to high heaven to be nice about it. If I ZIP a 2.58 MB file, it comes out as 2.56. Is there any way to jack up the compression ratio so I could get a 2.58 down to say 2 or less? Thanks.

You could try WinZip or any of the other proprietory zip programs, but bear in mind that some files will not compress - or compress very little (<5 per cent).

I heard WinZip conflicts with XP's native ZIP thingy. I was trying to compress an XP security patch to email to someone.

The security patch is in all likelyhood allready compressed so you won't be able to get it much smaller than it allready is. :(

EXE (install) file generally don't compress much...

I tried a 1,709,600 bytes Office patch in Winzip, and it only compressed down to 1,666,185

Send them a link to download instead.

I want to, but my friend has Sasser and can't stay online long enough to download anything. I don't have any blank CDRs, so I can't take the files to him. However I may get a multi-diskette program and take the stuff to him that way. His computer's OK as long as it's offline.
