My XP workstations have to reboot several times a day to gain
access to an NT Server. Win98 and 2000 can access this NT server just fine - has to be something with XP?

Note: The Primary Domain controller is Win2000 Server, the NT server is just a computer in the domain.

Event log messages on either the NT or XP boxes at about that time that look interesting?

And you speak of a 2K PDC which would indicate a classic NT4 domain (PDC, BDC, etc.). Is this the case? If so, anything interesting in the event logs of either PDC or whichever BDC usually validates logins from the subnet containing either of the problem machines?

There is no BDC -- the event log on the XP machine has an entry about a downgrade attack for server DNS/ns1.internet-dns.net,
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon
    request (0xc000005e)

I have searched the knowledge base on this event ID and came up empty.

I have installed SP6a on the NT Machine there was some issue about connectivity with Win2000.

I have installed NETBUI on the XP machine found something about
    connectivity with NT Servers.

    The battle continues...

Need to see the exact, entire event log message. Easiest thing to do is open it then click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy to the clipboard. Then just paste the contents here. Do this for the specific one you mentioned and if the connectivity errors have events, post them as well.

ssandel: On the Event Properties panel in the upper right quadrant, there are three buttons: up arrow, down arrow, and a "copy document" icon. Click on the copy button, then make the message input text box, here, be the current context and press CTRL-V (paste) ... that action should yield something like this:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: ACPI
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 5
    Date: 6/9/2003
    Time: 1:50:27 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: WinBox
    Description:
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0xcf8), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
