We are using an E-Machines computer from Tiger Direct. It came with Windows XP installed and does not have an XP disk.
We started having problems with the computer running slow. We did get the error that the virtual memory was too low and that windows was going to reset the virtual memory. After deleting some unneeded programs it seems to be working. Now windows will not start at all. We are getting a virtual memory error again and a windows product activation error and a runtime error. I can't give any details about them because it doesn't even show the details about the errors. I have seen an error that windows was missing files and could not start. I have tried to start in safe mode but then I get the product activation error. Is there any way to fix this without a reformat? Did we pick up a virus that damaged windows?

I was able to get windows to open in safe mode (don't ask me how). I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions on different settings I could change to help in the next startup.

W/O a XP cd, can't even begin to diagnose. Call either Tiger or E-Machines and get one.

What E-machines may have is a way to re-install the system to "factory settings" via a bootup setting - I don't know. Again, you're going to have to contact the vendor.

    Regards - Charles

Did you delete these programmes or correctly uninstall them??

As Charles suggests, if the PC didn't come with an XP disc then it should have come with restore discs. If not, contact Tiger Direct. You're entitled to one of these. Period!
