XP user profile corrupted?

I have a user that crashed out of XP and on subsequence login, XP created a new profile (desktop, icons, etc.) like it was the first time the user was created.

I checked the Doc and Settings directory and the old username directory still exist and XP created a 2nd username.pcname directory for the user.

I've tried deleting the new username.pcname directory and get the user to login again but w/ no success. Short of copying everything from the original directory to the new, does any one know how I might recover the previous profile and what XP is doing?
