Try the fix for this at Kelly's
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs2.htm Scroll down to why updates don't download.

Why did you uninstall it? The original problem is relatively minor.

    Don't ever go on-line w/o a firewall on - you're asking for trouble.

    XP Hot Fix KB828026

Tried every thing at Kellys Kroner, still could not get it to stop showing as I need this update. The reason I uninstalled it was to try and get the Windows Automatic Update from saying I needed to install it.
    Thank you

    Ok,

    Two things to try:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=822798 Method 3, renaming the Catroot2 folder.

Find a folder called WU temp - you may have to turn "show hidden files and folders" on in the folder's tool menu > view and delete anything you find there.

EDIT: A third option - do you have a System Restore point to go back to prior the initial install? If you can, go back to that point and try the update again.

Or failing that, a restore prior to your uninstalling it.

    Regard - Charles

I have one of those stubborn rascals regarding Directx on a Win98SE machine. I finaly gave up and just plain ignore it. All Directx testing returns the message that all is well. No problems with games, or any graphics so I will just continue to ignore it.

Yup ! I just checked and it still shows as needed.

I have now tried everything that you suggested and everthing Mircosoft suggested.Nothing seams to work. I am not sure ,but I think it was installed and caused no conflicts before I let Microsoft download SP2 on my computer.
    Thank you for your help
