I recently did a clean installation of XP home. My previous system was 98se. I have a Visoneer Paper Port scanner and software that is not supported. I tried to install it in compatibility mode, but it did not work properly. I did an uninstall. Found 2000/NT update files and tried again in that compatibility mode. Still did not work properly. Again I uninstalled it, but this time, when I boot the system, I get the message that it is trying to connect the scanner but failed. It re-tries several times then finishes loading the desktop. I have removed all files and folders from the drive, removed all references I can find from the registry, checked the start folder and the start section of the system tools, the add/remove software section, and system.ini and win.ini. I have double-checked; doing extensive searches for all hardware and software folders and files on the drive and in the registry. I even have searched for the phrase in the on screen message. I can find no entries to account for this attempt to connect a scanner that isn’t even there anymore. Obviously, I am missing something. Any ideas?

    Thanks

start~run~eventvwr.exe and search both the apps and system log files for likely looking errors and warnings.

M$ online help is usually pretty good about finding details if you feed it the event details but not always so if you find something and can't quite figure it out, open the event, click on the icon below the up/down arrows (puts a copy in your clipboard) and paste it here so we can have a look.

The event log showed nothing relating to this problem, at least as far as I can tell. I am glad you alerted me to this log as I discovered differt problem as a result of reviewing the error listings.

    Thanks
