    [Resolved]XP Stuck- Ubuntu working!

I seem to have a virus attack on my PC running XP with SP2, neither Spybot or AVG seem to touch it. The symptoms are as follows:-
    1) I can't access the web because a message says that my browser is already running but it does not appear in Task Manager

    2) When I try to open a folder to access programme files in explorer or My Computer the dialog box for "OPEN WITH" comes up instead of the usual list of files.

There are other less specific symptoms such as my desktop colour has reverted to the default setting, the programmes I can run are very slow and there seems to be a lot of HD activity.

AVG suggested a "Mediapipe" infection but running a SmitFraud removal tool in Safe Mode has done no good.
Fortunately I have Ubuntu Linux co-loaded on my PC which enables me to contact you. (Last time I use peer to peer!).
I'm pretty sure that someone at WBBS will know the answer to this proiblem.
Any suggestions of getting my PC back would be much appreciated

    Hi bg9208
From what HJT log you posted I'm not seeing anything. It seems that part of the log is missing.

    Please do this.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges to complete the following.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy and then paste the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Please post the "main.txt" log only for now.

    Thanks
    Geri

    xp not working

Thanks for your reply Geri, As I now have little functionality with Windows, I downloaded DSS to Ubuntu and copied it to the "Run" function on XP which is about the only thing that works. I'm back again in Ubuntu now and paste the log here:
I hope that this is useful.

    Hi bg9208

I see you have P2P software ( Limewire, BitTorrent uTorrent etc… ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares and their infections.

References for the risk of these programs are here,
    here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

Note: Please be advised that continued use of these programs after being warned of the danger of infections from them, may result in the discontinued help of future cleaning of your system here at Windowsbbs Virus and Spyware removal.

The only thing I'm seeing is in your HJT back-ups.
Have you gotten help on another forum somewhere? If so where and please post a link to the site.

I see these cleaners, When was the last time you used them? Anytime about when this started?
    Duplicate Cleaner

    XP not working, Ubuntu OK

Thanks for your comments Geri. Verb Sap. I have dumped Bit Torrent, although I've never used it and Limewire. Yes I did have a number of dial up problems, being in rural France, most of them down to dodgy phone lines as well as a modem with inbtermittent faults. Sionce then and until now no problems.
I have had a number of problems resolved by WBBS over a few years for which I am very grateful.
I ran duplicate cleaner a few weeks ago to get rid of duplicate photographs in a couple of different directories but I can't ever remember running Reg.Cleaner, If I did, I wouldn't have changed anything.
I have managed to connect to IE in XP now by going to the "Run" applet in the Start button.
Firefox still is unuseable as it says that it is already running.
I suppose my only option now is to attempt to re-install XP.

    Xp not working

Sorry, forgot to mention, no I haven't looked for help on any other forums, never felt the need to, WBBS has Always, in the pas,t been able to provide the solutions to any computer problems which I might have had.
I managed to get IE working on XP but it is painfully s-l-o-o-w so I'm back to Ubuntu

    Hi Brian
OK, There's just nothing jumping out at me in the logs.

Lets run this to see if it finds any left overs from the things that have been fixed with HJT.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) from here or here and save the file to your desktop.

Double click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select 'Perform Quick Scan', then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Post the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

    Thanks
    Geri

    Hi
Please paste this in a command window and reboot.

Click Start> Run> Type cmd in the Run box and click OK.

    Code:
    reg export HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2 %systemdrive%\mountpoints2.reg
    reg delete HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2 /f
    regsvr32 /s /i shell32.dll
    exit
    cls

    Are drives opening correctly now?

Please Check the Target of the Firefox icon Properties. I see Opera running in processes. You have both?

    Hi geri,

The magic incantation typed into command prompt did at least part of the job (couldnt get the Ctrl/v paste function to work), I can now look inside folders which makes running applications much easier. I still have the Firefox problem but can report a bit further. yes I do have Opera installed as of yesterday and this works without a problem giving me access to the internet without recourse to rebbopting to Ubuntu and back again.
I find that If I click on my ISP (Orange) "Mail" tab, it takes me into their version of Firefox which runs without problem. I'll give it a while and report back on whether the PC has built up back to it's old speed and whether the frantic disk activity has diminished.
Re. the Firefox icon, right click on the shortcut and main icons shows 'read only' and 'hidden' unchecked.
Thank you for the excellent advice.

    Hi Geri,

As an afterthought, I have uninstalled Firefox, including personal settings and bookmarks and downloaded the application from Mozilla's website. The newly installed programme seems to work fine, keeping my finger crossed).
Just so I know in future, do you have any idea of what caused the problems initially and what did the command lines actually do if that's possible to explain.
At this point in time, it looks like we're "cooking with gas ". I must admit, that I let my subscription lapse but I will be subscribing again when I'm properly awake, money well spent.

    Hi
Open the properties again click the short cut tab.
See if it shows "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" in the target box.

Then click OK to close the window.

Push Ctrl > Alt >Delete to bring up task manager click on the process tab and check the CPU, what if any are running at a high CPU usage. Other then the system Idle Process.

That could be a Ubuntu bug, see here.
Can't paste in terminal using ctrl+v shortcut... - Ubuntu Forums
Try the CTRL + SHIFT + V. and see if it works.

It looks like you've nailed the final problems Geri, Many thanks, I'm up and running back to where I used to be and the speed problem no longer exists. Any idea what virus may have caused the problems?

    Hi bg9208
Not sure what virus would have done this, but your shell32.dll file was corrupted.
    FYI
Ctrl+V does not work in a command window. Right click>Paste only.

Glad things seem back to normal.

Lets get a on-line scan to make sure things are OK.

If you have ATF Cleaner please run it, if you don't please do this.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
This is a good tool to get rid of the temporary garbage you pick up while surfing the net.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Cookies
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache
    Recycle bin

The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

    Now a on-line scan.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on "Accept" If your pop "“up blocker blocks any windows from opening.

Click Run on the window that opens.
Windows Vista users you must open the web browser using the Run as Administrator command.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Under Scan on the left side.Click on My Computer
    • This will start the program and scan your system.
    • Click the "Scan Report" On the left side.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Click the Save Report As button, and in the Browse dialog box, type a name for the scan report file that you want to create and select its type Text file. Click OK to save the file.:
    • Save the text file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

    Please post the Kaspersky results.

    Thanks
    Geri

    Hi Geri,

Kapersky scan came up with zero of all threats or anything else.

Everything seems to be stable and up on speed again. Looks like you have solved my problem.
Many thanks for your invaluable help.

    Hi Brian
    OK That's good to hear.
    Glad to help out.

You can delete dss.exe and this folder C:\Deckard

Please look at this link for some preventive recommendations, It could keep you from ending up back here to the Spyware and Virus Removal Forums.
