When my system restarts now, my screen comes up and I have to click on either xp professional or xp professional set up. If I don't pick the xp professional, the system will keep on rebooting until I pick it. How do I get rid of this when the computer is first turned on or I have to restart it. Help!!!!!

    Have a look at your boot.ini - in C:

    Should look something like this
    "[boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect "

    Post yours if different

Every is the same as yours. Also, what is a RPC SERVER? When I am trying to reinstall my printer I am getting the message that the rpc server is not installed. Thanks

RPC Server - out of my depth on that one. The nearest I can get is this:

Start > Run and type services.msc

    Scroll down to:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - Startup type should be Automatic

    and

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) locator - Startup type should be Manual

Suggest you start a new thread on this with " rpc server not installed? " as the title.

I went to where you told me and the rpc was started but the printing spool was not. I started that and now my printer is working. Something got in my system 4 days ago and it went crazy. I had the internet firewall and the McAfee firewall and somehow the McAfee firewall was disabled. I finally got the wall going again with an online tech. Thanks for the help. One more question. My windows xp is welcome logo is staying on for a longer time than usual and then goes off. Any ideas on this? Thanks.

Glad to hear that you got the printer set up - no ideas on your Welcome screen though.

In view of your problems of late I would be very much inclined to run an online virus scan just to check if McAfee has missed anything. Try Housecall favoured by many on this Board.

If you have the McAfee Firewall I believe you do not need the XP builtin Firewall. And if McAfee was disabled I would not trust it now.

I agree with PeteC about doing some serious checking of that machine. Something may have gotten in and still be there.

And from my own short experience with McAfee I would be finding something different. And I do not suggest Norton ( any more ) either.

Kerio is much less costly. Easier on the machine. Very dependable. And all with FAR Less disk space and system loading.

And AVG for Antii Virus. I just upgraded two machines to AVG7 ( Pro I think ) for #33 for two years. So $66 for two years of updates is not bad at all.

If the Welcome screen is taking longer I would say it means more stuff is loading.

    One thing I forgot.

No matter which AV program you use check daily for updates.

And if a Virus should be found remove all of the previous restore points that have been made. Other wise it may be put right back.

Also some virus cleaner do have and effect on the Restore point files and may render them not realy safe to resuse.

    Sound advice, BB :)

FWI - Symantec in UK only auto-update on Wednesday, understand it is daily in the States.

Generally Norton AV only finds updates once a week unless there's something out of the ordinary. I've had many problems with AVG6 not actually cleaning up files that Norton AV 2002 dealt with quickly and easily. BillyBob, I'd love to know why you don't recommend it anymore and what experiences you've had with AVG7. Please PM me because I'd really like your thoughts on this.

McAffee AV and firewall on the other hand is.... not good in my experience. I went through about 3 months where I'd be removing it from people's computers to improve performance. And what an improvement. Many of my clients said they didn't want the Symantec equivalents because of how much they slowed things down and they were very surprised that those pieces of software were now running on their machines with better results.

Kerio is something I'm going to be looking into because BillyBob usually has very good advice to give. :)

As far as Windows Update, the best option that I've found is to grab all the Critical updates and then see if the recommended ones apply to your computer.

    Good luck,
    Chris

    Hi Pete,

"Symantec in UK only auto-update on Wednesday, understand it is daily in the States. "

Same here in the States thru liveupdate. There is a more frequent download from here http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-N95.html called Intelligent Updater which is a download of the entire AV definitions file which is added to by Symantec on an almost daily basis. Really only feasible if on high speed access.

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks for clarifying that, Charles.
