Instead of removing version 4.8 of AVAST my client installed version 5 he on top of version 4.8. When he rebooted the computer, he got the BSOD.

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you had this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Disable or install any anti-virus, disk fragmentation or backup utility. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical information:
    STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x82F75A38, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000) "

Before coming to you I've been at the AVAST forum and a few other support sites.
Any suggestions or comments are welcomed!!

    Thanks!

    From here .....
Can you start the computer in Safe Mode? If so, 2 options .....

Uninstall Avast - Avast Uninstall Utility

Use System Restore to a point prior to installing Avast 5 .....

How to start the System Restore tool by using the safe mode option with the Command prompt in Windows XP

    Thank you PeterC for replying!

If I attempt to just start-up the computer by turning it on, I receive the BSOD. The same holds true if I try to access the computer via Save mode.

I have a strong suspicion that the install of Avast 5 may be pure coincidence .....

I would check out the hard drive using the manufacturer's disk diagnostic software .....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Toshiba

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

To determine the make/model no. of your hard drive you will probably have to look inside the computer.

If you can get to a C:\ prompt you can run chkdsk /f as suggested in the error message you receive.

The computer does not come up. I was able to get to the console via the CD and performed a chkdsk /f it was not a successful procedure. :(

I will find out what is the make and model of the HD and run the appropriate hard drive test.

    Thank you for your suggestion!

I am inclined to agree. I have been using Avast! (free) v5.0.677 on three different computers, all with XP SP3 for months now with absolutely no problems. All three started with Avast! 4.8.

When I don't know what else to do to resolve the problem I look under the "hood ". I discovered that the USB board was no longer connected to the motherboard! This is the one of the few times I've found a board has worked itself away from the motherboard.

That didn't clear the problem but at least I know that all of the boards in the computer are well seated.

I now wonder if the loose board could have been the beginning of the computer's end...

I can't get into Safe Mode. I can hit F8 to start the process but when it is all said and done I continue to receive the BSOD.

Have you checked the hard drive using the manufacturer's diagnostic software - DOS version from a bootable CD?

I will find out who is the manufacture and what diagnostic software works best with the HD as soon as the backup procedure completes. I think the backing up process will complete by mid-day!

    Thanks PeteC! :)

How are you managing to back up the data when the computer will not boot? Installed the drive in another computer?

I am using Acronis. The system is booted up using Acronis's CD.

    Thanks for asking PeterC!

    From post 4
May be not... I've just done a search for this issue and there are a lot of reports of BSOD's after installing Avast 5 over 4.8, in all that I read going back to 4.8 cured the BSOD's.

Have you tried to boot with an XP disc. If so you could do a system restore back to before Avast 5 was installed.

Even if the Avast 5 install was not the cause at least a restore will illiminate it as a possibility.

Hey markmadras thanks for chiming in!

I certainly need all of the help I can receive!

I plan on using the XP Windows CD to see if I can get into safe mode. Once in safe mode I'm hoping that I will be able to remove AVAST from the machine. If that does not work I will attempt to perform a System Restore.

Having the data secured. This way if something goes wrong while trying to bring the dead machine back to life, I would have an image backup of all the data to rely on, if needed. At this point I could care less about the operating system if it has decided to go belly up. What I do care more about is the data.

Please don't take my last statement the wrong way but at this stage of the game I do have my priorities. :)

    Cheers!
