I've just downloaded and installed SP3 from a link provided by Paul Thurrott (Wininfo)

The update reads in About Windows from any folder after the install as Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp.080413-2111 : Service Pack 3)
    That's the final build.

BTW I used Autostreamer to slipstream the Service Pack with a copy of XP (inc: SP2) for future reformat or reinstalling. Worked flawlessly. Although I read that you need to slipstream on an XP machine rather than on a Vista PC.

I thought about it. But the chances of the machines (3) that I've installed SP3 on ever using the Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System in a point of sale environment are 0.

I'll wait until August to install SP3. My system is just how I want it. After I installed SP2, the speed of my web browsers tanked thanks to the 10 half-open connections limit. SP3 might introduce bugs with bigger problems, and I already have IE7 and WMP11.

I've noticed absolutely no difference on the 3 machines I updated. Which is both good and bad... Depending on how you look at it. ;)

Probably little use for those of us who have kept their XP install up to date. I guess slipstreaming SP3 would mean for a cleaner fresh install rather than the 150 odd updates since SP2, which must leave a bit of "crud" around, not to mention the fragmentation.

What is the link for XP SP3 for a stand alone PC XP SP2 Home edition. It would be better to download it and then install, right? I have automatic updates set to notify me. I usually then go to the Microsoft update site and download and install from there.

Is there a way to tell it to download only and not install, with the yellow shield in notification area (systray)?

If not, can someone give me the link to the download. Is SP3 for Home and Prof. versions of XP the same?

The 66.9 Mb offered by Windows Update is all your system needs, but you will not have a copy for further use or slipstreaming with XP SP2 to create an XP SP3 install CD.

If that doesn't bother you go for Windows Update

If you want the full SP3 Service Pack CD 545 Mb - includes everything since SP1 then go to Microsoft Downloads .....

So, if I'm a good girl and do my backups, I could just use microsoft update site, right?

Yes, but bear in mind that if you need to reinstall your OS at any time - that is a clean install with format - you will have to download SP3 which will be a lot larger if your install CD does not include SP2.

If you are not on DSL Widdows Update is the logical route.

I prefer to have the full service pack on CD as I maintain and build my own computers and do the same for friends.

I installed SP3 twice today. Nothing went wrong, I just wanted to test two different routes.

First, I did it through Windows Update (because this is the way my friends will do it, I think). It took WU 17 minutes to prepare the download (analyze the computer which was fully updated), download and check the download. Installing took 18 minutes. Total time, 35 minutes.

Next, I restored a Ghost Image and took the other route by downloading Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers which took a little over a minute and the installation took 20 minutes, in all 22 minutes.

So, the route to choose depends on your connection and if you want the "whole package" for slipstreaming or just for convenience.

I did manage to get a download of KB 936929 324 MB Honestly I forget where I finally got it from. Thanks for the catalogue link. I haven't looked for updates there before.

What is the difference between the 324 MB (316MB) file and the one that is
    500 and some?

The 500 MB download is an ISO file ..... an image file ready for burning to cd.

Do I need the ISO file if I want to later make a slipstream SP3 or will the
316MG file have everything I need?

I guess it wouldn't hurt to download and burn the ISO file onto a CD.

I too am a little ... ... as to why the ISO image is needed. Using Nero, I have burnt all previous "normal" Service Pack files to CD and using them was flawless.

I have used the "normal" Service Pack files when slipstreaming.

The cd created with the ISO is just like what you would get if getting a cd from MS ........ eg, it autoruns when inserted and has an 'Install Service Pack 3' front end. What actually gets installed would be the same with either download, and if it's to be slipstreamed, the smaller package download is what will be needed. You would have to extract that same package from the ISO image to use it for slipstreaming.

So if I use the smaller 316MB file, what does it contain? SP2 and SP3? I bought this PC with XP SP1 installed and then installed SP2 when it came out. Will it only install what I need to update my system to SP3?
