    Steve,

    " is currently planned for 1H CY2008 "
I assume that CY2008 means calendar year 2008, but what does 1H mean?

    Outch!

Service Pack 2 for Windows XP was released back in August of 2004, so we could well be looking at a 3 year gap between SP2 and SP3… ridiculous!

This is p*i*s*s*i*n*g me off. I will certainly not be forced to buy Vista because Microsoft is neglecting its customers. No other OS (to my knowledge) has had this many security issues and concequently this many updates. They should form a circle and start spanking eachother!

Hardly fair (he says with MS hat on :D) - the wierdo's who look for security loopholes are a lot cleverer and more sophisticated now than they were in the days of 98, etc. Not only do OS's improve, but means of penetrating their defences also improve.

Seems to me that SP 3 is more likely to be an update rollup rather than a 'new' OS as was the case with SP 2, especially now that the fancy file system that was supposed to be in Vista has been dropped. It was to be included in SP3 AFAIK.

    Hi Pete!

I never had a MS hat and after this ... ... well, my lips are sealed!

SP1 had its Update RollUp in september 2003, approximately a year after SP1 was released and I know that SP2 was more than a regular SP but that's not an excuse.

Specially if SP3 will be a real SP (meaning no new features, just all the fixes) there's no reason they can't have it done & tested in about 3 months.

I had to install a new machine with XP Home SP2. After that it still needed 62 updates! 35 MB! I can't imagine people with anything less then cable or DSL getting those...

XP SP3 Coming in less than seven months!

The intention is to supply several new features, including some VISTA features. Likely a replacement of the graphics and display system; a replacement for OE; new wireless client; WinFS; NAP for virus protection at boot; LLTDR for visual mapping networks; and other good things.

Viewed differently, SP3 will be here soon; in less than seven months!

Ahh ... :p ... I just love conflicting information ... ... is someone taking bets?

I hope that there will be no compatibility issues with an older BOAC (Box Of Assembled Components) like mine. "... including some VISTA features" makes me worried from that point of view but I'll have a fresh Ghost Image to roll back if needed. I assume that WinFS will be optional (like NTFS versus FAT32) because WinFS can not be read by Ghost 2003 (I guess).

    Will it include IE7?

I assume so, in order to allow slipstreams.

Why would anyone want Vista if they can update to WinXP SP3?

VISTA has a lot of features you will never see in XP. It is also inherently more secure.

Bill Castner--With due respect, MS has not sold me. I feel safe with XP using the security programs in place on my PC. Vista features seem evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
And why is MS developing XP SP3?

MSFT is not using developer resources on SP3 at the moment. Most of what will be in SP3 is either already done: (vetted KB articles where you see now the suggestion to contact Microsoft for a Hotfix); or are cross-platform products in Beta test such as the OE replacement, the WSH replacement, etc. The feature set planned for XP was closed several years ago.

Then SP3 itself has to go through Beta and RC form.

But at the moment it is all Vista as to development resources.
