Hi There, I know this is a much posted subject all over the net and believe me, I've tried many of the suggestions out there to solve my problem but to no avail so far.

I've had my laptop, an AJP 8599, for around 5 years now. It came preinstalled with XP home SP1 and all was fine. I installed all the ms updates as they came along with no problems.
Then SP2 appeared. It wouldn't install, the update.exe process would just terminate, often quickly, so I tried a few things like virus scans, spybot, adaware etc. installing in safemode with no success.

I then contacted microsoft explaining my problem. They did 2 things:

    1. Pointed me to the PC manufacturer who sent me the latest BIOS which I am now running with.
    2. Sent me a CD with SP2 on it.

Neither of these solved my issue.

I trawled the forums and tried anything that I thought might work to get SP2 installed as it appears to be an important update. This was around 3 years ago. In the end I got fed up and just decided to live with the problem and SP1.

Fast forward to this year and a resolution to get this thing sorted. I read an article in windows xp magazine about wiping and reinstalling XP. It seemed like a good idea in general and I thought it could solve my issue.
So, I backed up the c drive, located the OEM disk that came with the machine and followed the instructions to reinstall.
I got myself up and running and downloaded and installed the latest drivers for all my hardware and inserted the SP2 diskthinking I'd cracked it.

But, guess what, after all that I'm left with the same symptoms! Any suggestions on this would be most welcome, it's driving me nuts.

So, here are my symptoms after inserting the SP2 CD:

    1. The SP2 copys all the files to the harddrive, say in D:\eed274423c186c7e03f91469c2b00c\i386 and runs the update.exe.
    2. Most of the time I get about as far as agreeing the EULA before windows detects a problem and asks me to send microsoft an error report. Sometimes it gets a little further than EULA but terminates in the same way.

Here is a typical extract from svcpack.log, I won't put the whole file here as it contains many failed attempts.
At the time of failure I see 2 errors in the event viewer with IDs 1000 and 1001.

The first has the following description:
    The second:
Somewhere I read that Dr Watson can provide some more information so I ran drwtsn32.exe -1 and found a load of errors like the following:

I located the drwtsn32.log which contains some debugging information but I'm afraid it doesn't mean that much to me. All I can make out is that SetupApi.dll appears to have an issue. Given I'm using MS disks for SP1 and SP2 I'd be surprised if there is an error in the dll so presumably something else is the problem here.

Does anyone have any ideas what my issue might be?

    Thanks in advance,

    Andy.

BTW I've also tried contacting MS again and they replied that I should check out their forums which I have done but found nothing so far that helps.

    Here's the drwtsn32.log:

What I would do is to try & slipstream SP2 in your windows CD so you do a clean install with SP2.

Thanks Arie. I'll give the splistream article a read and try it out. I'll post to let you know the results either way.

Good news, I've managed to get running on SP2 using slipstreaming. I used the link you posted plus some info I found here slipstream

I had some issues with the disk I created when running the actual install, a couple of files couldn't be found for some reason. Maybe I messed up somewhere along the line or used a faulty CD. Anyway, I simply inserted the original XP installation disk for those files and quickly swapped back once the files in question had been found. I wasn't confident at this point but it worked in the end.

Many thanks for the suggestion as I now have a working PC using SP2 and a clean install.

Thanks Evan. I spent some time yesterday getting all the latest updates including SP3 and everything is working ok it seems. I still have some work to do re-installing previous software and copying back my data and I'll be back to normal but windows wise I'm now bang up to date.
