I'm trying to download and install SP2 using Windows Update on an old Dell XP-Pro but a few seconds after it starts I get:

    Installation Failure
    Error Code: 0xFFFFFBFE
Try to install the update again or request help from one of the following resources:

    Frequently Asked Questions
    Find Solutions
    Windows Update Newsgroup

but I could not find anything relevant.

    Any ideas?

Try to download SP3 from microsoft.com, save it & then install it instead of trying to install it from windowsupdate.com.

Also make sure that you are free of virus/malware & don't have any flaky software installed before applying the patch.

    Good luck.

Yes download the SP3 from MS install it and then slipstream to your copy of XP and you have it on the one CD if you ever have to re-install XP.

    1. Thanks guys. I'm downloading SP2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals.
I don't know exactly how that compares/differs from the Windows Update version but please confirm that it is ok to run that one?

    2. Also since you mentioned SP3 also, am I correct that I can skip SP2 and go direct to SP3. My computer is fairly old and just want to make sure that SP3 will run on it ok?

The Network installation contains all elements of SP2/3 - i.e. the full package - only those items required by your computer will be installed. Windows Update gives you only those items relevant to your computer - that's the difference.

I have always used the Network package when upgrading.

The Network Installation for SP3 requires SP1 as a minimum, so, yes, you can bypass SP2 ....
