My XP Sp2 PC has slowed down quite a lot since I put a USB 2.0 media (memory card) reader in the computer. Tried to read a 6MB jpg file into memory and it reported something like 8 hours for the transfer. Went to another computer and it loaded in the norm time. Copied the file to a CD and again my computer reported about 8 hours. Tried to FTP the file using WS-FTP Pro to my web site. Was uploading at 50K/sec normally 150K/sec minimum. Agin moved to the other computer and it did the FTP at 165K/Sec. I have run AdAware, and SpyBot. The computer just seems slow. Have not tried disconnecting the Media Card Reader.

    Any thoughts????

    Hi engcon,

It seems to be having trouble transferring any data. I think I would look for updated motherboard/chipset drivers for it.

Since the card reader is USB 2.0 you may also want to check your system to be sure that your USB isn't actually 1.0. If this is the case a PCI USB2.0 card may solve the problem.

Before you go out and buy a card I would wait and see what others say about my thought on this.

Interesting point Jay. I am wondering about the CD transfer and I would expect that even poor old USB 1.0 may function a little faster than 1mb an hour :D . If you look at the specifications for the motherboard (at the motherboard manufacturer's website or at the front of the motherboard manual), if it just states "USB ", it will be USB 1.0. If it has USB 2.0 capability, it will state "USB 2.0 ".

Engcon, you only mention 1 file. Have you tried any others?

It may be a bad set of drivers for the card reader. Remove them in Device Manager and reinstall. Check the manufacturer's website for updated drivers.

Edit: also check that the reader is connected well. Pull and reseat the connections (do this in conjunction with removing the drivers).

Yes, that was not originally in my train of thinking and I would not have investigated it. I would now though
