Just installed Win XP Pro in a dual boot with Win ME.

XP is very slow to boot from what I am used to.
It takes less than 15 secs. from picking XP to boot from to get all icons on the desktop. Quite nice... but...... Here's the kicker........

It takes another 1 minute and 15 seconds from there to where the OS is usable.

Is this long for XP?? Please advise!

Using Norton Antivirus(disabled at startup) and Internet Security 2002. Disabling both of these at startup makes NO difference.

    TIA,

    Dale

After more searching I found this......

    " " "Settings->Control Panel->Adminsitrative Tools->Computer Management
Expand "Services and Applications" and highlight "services ".
"Workstation" ought be on the very bottom on the right pane.
Get its properties then set "Startup type:" to 'disabled'.

There's a note basically saying what the service does. It "Creates and
maintains client connections to remote servers. If this service is stopped, these
connections will be unavailable. If this
service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to
start." Disabling kills the wait, which you'll see immediately on your next
    reboot. :)" "" ......

I tried out this solution with HUGE success!!!!
It reduced my boot time from 90 seconds to just under 30 seconds, just what I was looking for!!!!

    This tip came from......

Nice find and thanks for posting it.

Workstation service would be required on a domain style network but certainly not for a stand-alone or small peer LAN.

And FWIW, I think part of the delay from workstation service is that it looks for stuff with nothing to find. Boot time on XP-Pro on a domain is good.

Wow: I have been annoyed with XP Home's start up times, taking up to 3 minutes after desktop appeared for it to be useable.

I disabled "Workstation" in spite of the dire warnings and cut at least two minutes off of time. Glory be! Besides, for me, as the warning states, among other things that Messenger will be disabled. Sounds good to me!

So, if no other ill effects, I'm happy:)

Note: on XP Home, after you get the service highlighted you have to right click to get to properties and right click to disable. I first just shut it off and it re-started itself next boot. But after disable, new fassst boot.

    Hi dale442...

Here is a great link to a site that mentions what services it is safe (and what is the outcome if you do turn them off) to turn off. He also has a Win2000 page.

There must be some universal truth in the maxim: Different strokes for different folks.

I tried the workstation fix. Shut down, then rebooted. It took over 7 minutes!!! Just as it looked like it was finished at 3:30, it decided to black out, and start booting all over again, another 3-1/2 minutes. RATS!
