I have XP Pro with Office 2003 installed on my laptop. It was working perfectly until one day I downloaded some updates but did not restart afterwards. The problem I am having is that when I go to open any template in any of the programs, it quickly posts an error message (so fast that I cannot read it) then shuts down and restarts.
I loaded Publisher 2000 just to see what it would do and it does the same thing.
The only difference I notice is that I put some shortcuts on my desktop and when I open them from the desktop they are ok.
I was running SP 1 (I don't use that laptop much) and then downloaded SP2 thinking that maybe that would correct everything but it does not.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Karen

PS I took some blurry pics of the error message and will try to decipher if you need me to.

Right click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Start up and Recovery > Settings and under System Failure uncheck 'Automatically restart'. This will result in the computer stopping at the blue error screen rather than restarting automatically. Post the relevant details from the blue screen here.

Also look in Event Viewer (Right click on My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer) and see if there are any events in System and Application flagged either with a with X on a red ground or an exclamation mark. Double click on an event to open and on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and paste here if relevant.

Will do! I am on my PC now but will do it later and then post as requested.
Thanks for getting back so fast.

It's been awhile but here is what my computer said:
A problem has been detected & windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the 1st time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again (which it does) follow these steps.
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the mfg. for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.
Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS meemory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options & then select safe mode.

I recognize the Stika. I installed a program for a cutter plotter for a Stika Brand cutting machine. I tried installing the updates, but I am not sure if I was successful.
Should I post a HJT log? for you

    Thanks

No need to post an HJT log - the problem is not malware related....

An 0x0000008E is an apparantly rare and random stop error and occurs when a program references an incorrect memory address. It was supposedly fixed in SP2.

The culprit here is the Stika software which I understand is used for generating templates for vinyl cut outs and the like and which must interact with Word and other Office templates in some way.

I suggest you uninstall the Stika software, see if the Office problem is resolved and then reinstall it. See if you can determine if it is the program or the update which is causing the problem.
