I am reinstalling XP on my son's IBM NetVista. I have downloaded the MS SP1a from their site. When the installation requests the SP1, it does not recognize the CD. First, are the files to be loose on the CD or in a folder and, if in a folder, what should I name it? Second, shouyld the lable on the CD have a name other than XPSP1?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hello Rev. Bob,

Not clear on some aspects of your post.

    SP1a is SP1 w/o MS's java version.

As far as I know, XP reinstall does not request anything other than XP's install disk. What's requesting SP1?

I have not loaded SP1a, but shouldn't be any different than the SP1 install. If you open the disc and read the caveats and info, there should be a clickable "install" command.

Maybe an install of SP1 needs to be done first, but I don't think so.

    Regards - Charles

This is on a reformatted disk with nothing on it other than a copy of the system files. It will not boot from the CD and must be booted with the 6 boot XP diskettes available from MS. It aks first for the XP CD after the 6th diskette. At about 25 minutes left in the installation, it asks for the XP Service Pack 1. I have downloaded the information and placed it on a CD. It will not recognize the CD and asks for it again. This is where I get stuck.
    Thanks.

    Hi Rev Bob,

    Two things to try:

Right click on the drive with SP1 cd in it. Choose explore. You should see a file called XPSP1.EXE, that's the setup exe. Left Double click on that.

Or if that doesn't work, download the files to a folder, and try from there.

The name of my disc is XRMSP1_EN This was shipped to me from MS, I did not download it.

    Regards - Charles

What happens if you ignore the SP1 prompt and continue on? Perhaps you could install the SP later, after XP is fully loaded and installed.

It will not allow me to ignore the request for the SP1. I will try renaming the CD to the suggestion Charles gave. Thank you all for your help.
