Had a computer runnung win98. The monitor (LG Studioworks 56m) was detected properly and refreshing at 85hz. Now computer has XP Pro and same monitor will only refresh at 75hz and XP recognises it as "Default Monitor ". I can change it to LG but it still only has a max of 75hz refresh.

No matter what I do, or what monitor I select, 75hz is the max I can get.

Any ideas? I have heard XP has refresh problems but I'm stumped.

Have you loaded the monitor .inf file which either came with the monitor or should be available for download from LG?

Quite possibly - it would be the latest available whereas that included with XP could be several years old. Having said that it may not have been updatd :)

Is it possible when you installed XP it defaulted to a higher resolution than you were using in 98? If you're resolution is set higher than before, lower it to what it was and you'll probably be able to use 85 for a refresh rate.

Is 75Hz hard on your eyes? If not, I'd leave it set there even if you can set it higher. There's really nothing to be gained by setting it higher if it doesn't give your eyes a problem where it is. On the other hand, setting it higher taxes your system more.

FWIW, I set mine at the lowest setting I can. As long as I don't end up with a head ache or cross eyed or anything like that, it's fine with me. The one I'm using now supports up to 85Hz. I've got it set at 70. I'm one that's on the computer quite a bit and on this monitor I can't tell the difference between 70Hz and 85Hz. It's an LG monitor too.

Im a little like you Zander. The computer is for kids and they tend not to notice at all anyway but as is ususal for me I seem to have this need to find out "why ". At least it's not stuck at 60hz. That would drive me nuts

Yes, 60 would drive me dingy too. 65 the same but 70 seems to be just fine for me. Have you checked to see if the resolutiton is different than it was in 98. On the computer I'm using now the resolution was set to 800X600 after the intitial 98 install. When I installed XP on it, it was set to 1024X768 on the first boot. The resolution you have it set at does make a difference as to what refresh rates are available.

Having said that, if the resoulution is the same as it was before, you should probably check for an updated inf file at LG's web site. It should be able to run the same resolution and refresh rate in XP as it did in 98. If no luck there see if there's a newer version driver available for the graphics card.

Well it gets even more interesting. I have another computer. Exactly the same as the first. It's now running XP with LG monitor and you guessed it, it's refreshing at 85hz. Both at 800 X 600.

Now I'm going to officially give up and crack open the scotch!!!

    Hello Greg,

Whats the DPI set at? The XP defualt is 96, the higher the dpi is the better on the eyes as well.

    Regards - Charles

Exactly the same. No hardware changes at all.

The video card is an Intel 82815 on board graphics controller. In 98 it refreshed at 85hz in XP it refreshes at 75hz
