XP running VERY slo CPU usage almost 100%

Hi my XP system is running VERY slow. I checked CPU usage & it's pegging alternately at 100, 17, 98 13, 156, 21, 49 , 98, 32, 98....... as i write this post. I have cleaned out all the temp files, defreaged the C drive, run Regedit, System Mechanic Spybot, Spysweeper. All this has made no difference. How do I determine who is the culprit?

Have now determined that this seems to happen ONLY when a web window is open. (Iexplorer running). when the browser is closed, max CPU time is about 35% when operating just QuickBooks.

I have split your post to a new thread to avoid confusion and suggest you post a HijackThis log.

Download HijackThis via Quicklinks in my sig, save it to a folder on your hard drive, close all browser windows, run and post the log here. We will then move your thread back to the Removing Spyware and Viruses Forum.

Of the list of programs you gave - Three really really bug me:
    System Mechanic Spybot, Spysweeper.

May I recommend the purchase of Regedit, Spyhunter (only removes Backweb), Ad-aware SE professional and Pest Patrol.

This combination beats all others hands down, with the added bonus of not containing spyware.

Your response to this thread is not entirely relevant - just your opinion and I hope other members will see it as just this.

Those familiar with the interpretation of HJT logs are desperately overworked as a glance in this forum list will confirm.

    Please be patient.

You seem to have new varient of an old malware.

You need to unzip HJT into it's own folder, do another Scan Only, and remove these items.

Reboot. When windows is up and running, go to Start\Run and type in CMD and press Enter. In the dos window, do these commands.
    del c:\windows\downlo~1\vptb.dll
    del c:\windows\downlo~1\tgtb.bll
    exit

The above isn't enough to use 100% of the CPU, however the following is a possibility.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] C:\WINDOWS\System32\qttask.exe
Reboot and rename the file Qttask.Exe to Qttask.Old, or any other name you choose. It is from Quicktime and is notorious for causing problems and basically does nothing for you.

I took the actions recommended, and still I have a usage spike when a web window is open.

    Your log is clean.
If it only spikes to 100%, I see this as normal. Remaining at 100% can be a problem if you are not running something that will use 100%, such as creating a MP3 file.

    Ram For Christmas

    Pilotgal8

I have read over the posting rules and I hope that I am not breaking any with this obvious suggestion? My XP came with only 120 MB Ram and slow was an understatement! Last Xmas my son gave me a 512MB upgrade Wow what a difference. Not the same machine.I feel that any increase in this area would help.Forgive me if this is not a proper posting I am rather new at this type of info exchange.
