Be aware that I have never used AOL nor have I ever worked on a computer set up for AOL so I don't know what, if any, effect its presence will have on the following cleanup routine. It's the process I use regularly on my customer's computers and it works without problems.

Download, install, immediately update and run Spybot and Ad-Aware.

Both are free and between the two of them most, if not all of the spyware on your friend's computer will be found. Let each program get rid of everything they find.

Since his computer is loaded with spyware, he should consider getting Spyware Blaster.Set it to protect everything and it does a good job of keeping spyware from installing in the first place. Note that the free version must be updated manually.
