I recently built my PC and its a PIII 600, 256Mb, 20Gb, XP Pro, etc.

I am having a problem that whenever I finish using my computer and leave it alone for about an hour, I would come back and it would be displaying the log in screen. I assumed that this was an auto log out setting so investigated to find out that it wasn't that. Then I checked the power settings and turned all hibernating and HDD sleeping/Standby mode features, including one in the BIOS, to only have the problem re-occuring.

Following that I downloaded Diskeeper to attempt to defragment my HD, but it would never manage to finish because of the computer re-booting. Finally I found a setting in the system properties\advanced tab that allowed me to turn off 'auotmatic reboot when system error occurs'. I though that must solve it (having had the odd 'system discovered a serious error' message, which I could click OK to and carry on normally) I re-ran Diskeeper assuming it would finish. But during the defrag I saw a blue error screen with :
" Stop: 0x00000006543 0xe00e50656 " (twice more), I am unsure of the exact digits, but it was similar.

It has now come to the point that if I want to leave the computer 'mid-document' I will have to shut down the computer unless I am going to be less than an hour returning!

I can not understand this and would really appreciate any help.

    Thanks
    DJT

Check the power options in control panel set all to always on even the top one. My PC won't go in to standby mode it just reboots.

    Hi, thanks for your advice,

I've checked all those options are set to never off etc. but does that mean that if standby mode is set to off, the system will naturally re-boot instead of going into standby mode because you've told it not to? I don't think so but maybe anyone can dis-agree?

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

BTW djt - The defrag program that ships with XP was written by the Diskeeper folks so you maybe didn't need an additional program.

Also, you might want to start a DOS window and have it run chkdsk /f or longer but more exaustive chkdsk /r.
