Curious ... one of the first things I did while setting up my XP Pro desktop and laptop computers was to delete all the screensavers. After nine months with the laptop and six with the desktop, they're still gone. Good luck in finding the answer.

Some of them are backed up in the dllcache folder. You will need to delete them from there, too.
If you have SP1, you will find some in ServicePackFiles\i386 , too.

"Curioser and curioser ", said Alice ...

I have no screensavers in the dllcache folder, and am sure I never deleted any from there.

You're quite right about there being some in ServicePackFiles\i386, but none of them show up on the Screensaver tab in Display Properties. The only one there the one I installed.

Well, then we need to pull out the big guns!
Restart in Safe Mode and do what you will with them. That is the only way I have been able to alter some protected files. If Windows asks you later if you want to replace them, say "No ".
(Safe Mode is F8 right after POST.)

    Hi Abraxas,

Actually, I just deleted the screensaver files from ServicePackFiles\i386 with no problem ... apparently, they aren't backed up. And, since all the others I don't want are already deleted, I'm in good shape.

As long as you're online, let me ask you a question about something that has me puzzled.

I'm trying to customize a folder icon, so copied the desktop.ini file from a folder that already has a customized icon. I edited the file to reflect the icon I want to use, but the folder stubbornly refuses to change from the Windows default icon (even after rebooting). They're both folders that I created, so there should be no system restrictions. Any thoughts?

I should add that it's my Win98SE computer that's refusing to cooperate, but the same desktop.ini files work on both of my XP computers.

Sorry. I haven't played with the folder icons too much. But it seems that there may be a big difference between the ini files from XP to 98.
In any case, do you have the icon you want to use located in exactly the same path on all computers? The ini file will need to be able to find it.

No, the folder desktop.ini files are identical in both OSs, and they reflect the proper paths.

I just tried to do exactly the same thing on my XP laptop, and met with the same failure, even though I have other custom folder icons.

Guess Friday the 13th is getting me a day early this month.

I just solved the problem with a program called E-Icons 98. I don't know why it's able to accomplish the task when I can't, as all it does is add the same desktop.ini file to the folder (although you manually select the desired icon as part of the process).

Anyway, Friday/13th is banished until tomorrow (knock wood).

So, what's wrong with the usual Properties, Customize route?

I wasn't thinking about Properties/Customize because it's not available in Win98, which was where I was having the original problem.

I'd love to go back to Australia (spent 10 days there in 1995), but not just to avoid Black Friday. Besides, it's a fur piece (as they used to say) from Lawn Gyland.
