Hello All, I'm trying to re-install XP Home on a friend's pc and I keep getting the error "the version of Windows you are trying to install is older than the version currently installed, setup can not continue" I've tried his Dell XP re-installation disk and 2 others, including a copy of XP Pro.He was told by Dell tech support that he has a worm/virus that is blocking port 80 but they would not tell him the name of it.If anybody has run into this or has any suggesting I'd really appreciate it and thank you in advance.

    Best Regards,

It sounds like you are trying to start the setup from Windows. You need to start it when Windows isn't running. Boot from the XP CD and start it that way.

I found the same issue yesterday as well, but just ignored it and the system installed, I put it down to the fact that the installed version had critical updates that the CD didn't. HOWEVER, when I completed the "clean" install, it did not completely remove the old version. SO - back to square one again, looking for a way to do a clean install, this time I will try a slipstreamed SP2 version.

Any hints out there, to "force" a clean install?? I would really like an XP version of the old Fdisk and/or format.

Black Viper's website offers a very good step by step installation guide for XP Home (with screenshots). You are offered an option to delete the old partition and do a 'clean' install of WinXP (Pro or Home). HTH

To set up Windows XP now press ENTER

Searching for previous versions of Windows

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows without repairing press ESC

Ensure that the drive/partition selected is the one on which XP was set up and press D to delete the selected partition.

To delete the partition press ENTER

To delete the partition press L "“ heed the warnings and DOUBLE CHECK before hitting L

To create a partition in the unpartitioned space press C
