Just how much time and effort is involved in upgrading my current SP1 installation?

I have all of the MS updates and fixes so I assume, probably erroneously, that the software differences and other issues should not to be too demanding on time and effort.

Has anyone any thoughts or comments on this upgrade?
    Is it worth it?
    Is it essential?

    TIA

It is both worth it but required.

Support for XP SP1 has ended.

See if your local computer store has a CD copy of SP2. Perhaps a friend has a copy. Perhaps they will copy it to a CD-R for you.

Microsoft does not mind if you borrow, copy or use anyone elses Service Pack 2.

There are several advantages to SP2, including strengthened wirelewss networking support, a better firewall, a million little tiny security enhancements that are important, and the ability to use things such as Windows Defender that is not supported under SP1. Yoi are going to find it more and more common that SP2 is required to use software.
