When will you stop fiddling :) I would not bitch at ~2 mins - my XP system took far longer than that with startups, scans, etc.

Undo the changes, either manually or try System Restore.

You've already been advised re. Cachman and Bootvis is long dead in the water and was aimed at developers, not casual users. I haven't gone further into the article, but no doubt there are further doubtful/pointless tweaks listed.

If you must tweak - one tweak at a time and test for a day or so, then tweak further if you must :)

Always looking to speed things up.
Much of it was stopping services from loading to save time and memory.
If get a moment and can see if there is anything in the list I should change I'd certainly appreciate it.
It did speed up the shut down quite a bit.
    Thx Pete.

A two minute boot time wouldn't bother me. I think of it as time to get my first sip of coffee and a drag off my first cigarette in the morning.

My XP Home boots in 55 seconds. In the off times when it takes longer than 1 minute, I fix it. It's not that the lost time booting is important - it's what's causing it and how it may be affecting the rest of my system.

I'm going to try the acceleration ideas presented above.

I'd like to hi-jack the thread slightly and ask for help with another start-up delay.

I use MSN Premium as my ISP, under a contract with Verizon. In the last few days, the time between clicking on the MSN icon and getting to my home page has stretched out to almost seven minutes. It used to be about 90 seconds.

I've cleaned out the unwanted cookies (Window Washer), the spyware (Spy Sweeper), cleaned out the register and the TEMP files (Advanced System Care). They have given me a brief respite, but I'm back to about seven minutes again two days later.

After I try the tips, I'll see how things go, but does anyone have any tips about MSN?

When it slows down what have you found to be the cause?

    Frank,
your issue is specific to MSN as opposed to CB's which is more "general XP ". Please post a new thread in the Internet & Networking - General Internet forum.

With rare exception, it is caused by a newly installed program that is set to impose itself upon my system. I install and test a wide range of softwares and monitor their effects carefully. Boot time is an important component of that monitoring.

I find that Anti-Virus programs are among the biggest drags. Many of them come pre-set to do a full system scan daily. That slips by many casual users and leaves them wondering what is wrong with their system speed. Add that to a few other programs that are pre-set to contact home and check for updates (including MS updating) and you may find yourself with a system that is serving everyone but you.

One of the rare exceptions was a substantial boot time savings (22 seconds trimmed) that was realize by optimizing the Registry using the NTREGOPT tool included with ERUNT. NTREGOPT may not help everybody since it depends on how bloated the Registry may be due to various factors but it's chicken soup and a safe procedure, especially if you first use ERUNT to back up the Registry. Processor speed also is a factor in how much you might gain by running NTREGOPT - my old P4 system only runs at 1.6 Ghz. so it won't tolerate much of a challenge without asking me to patiently wait on it.

My slower bootup is due to my anti-virus set to do a quick scan at startup.

I tried ERUNT.NTREGOPT and there was no change.

Pete, If you get a moment would you look at the list and see if there's any tweaks you'd disagree with?
