I have just bought my wife a new PC with XP Pro.

On My machine with XP Home when the computer is put to sleep the optical mouse goes dead and the only way to wake it is to press the power button.

On the wife’s new PC the optical mouse stays powered up and creates a problem because every time we walk across the floor the mouse wakes up the PC.

How can I set the mouse to turn off when I put the PC to sleep?

The machine is an HP A1644X PD 915 1.

    Thanks

In the device manager select the device.
Go the that particular hardware in this case the mouse.
Look for the power management tab.
Select "allow computer to turn off this device to save power ".
    Apply .
A mouse in spite of the apparent light does not use much power at all.

    Wear slippers?

This is normal. The 5 volt standby power is always on unless the
power supply rear switch is off, if there is one, or the power cord
is unplugged. If you check the back of your computer you will
notice that the LAN connection LED is also on.

This is so that user selected actions can wake, or power up the computer.

Try Steven R. Jones' suggestion earlier to deny wake-up priviliges to the mouse. It might however take an additional step:

Go into BIOS settings and look for any "Wake on" settings. If you see a "Wake on" USB or Type 47 event, disable this. Quite frankly, you could disable all BIOS based "Wake on" eventing.
