A friend just called with problems with XP Pro freezing at the Welcome Screen.

On boot up the blue Scandisk screen appears, Scandisk runs and finds no problems and the boot continues to the Welcome Screen and the PC freezes.

Pressing the Reset button boots the PC straight to the Desktop with no further problems - until it is shut down. On the next boot the scenario is re-enacted.

    Any ideas?

I should mention that I installed Diskkeeper Home on this m/c some weeks ago. A warning message that the password will expire in 9 days time has reappeared - we have seen this before, despite not putting a password in at the instal stage (as I recall) and overcame it by restoring the system to a previous date. This time around I have found some threads with possible solutions which I will try out in due course.

    TIA

You do know that XP Pro has a password expiration built in by default (40 days? I think) whether you set one or not.

    Password Expiration
    Control Panel/ Administrative Tools/Local Security Policy/
    change password expiration to 0

But I don't know why it is freezing on the welcome screen like that. I'm sure someone else can point you to the right diagnostics.

    Cheers from Ohio

Thanks for pointing that out, Johanna - on my m/c it is set at 42 days, but here is the catch -

My PC has been running XP Pro for months now with nary a mention of password expiry - maybe that facet is not enabled?

    Greetings from UK

Pete - you can also set a particular account to never have the password expire in the local users and groups area. That will bypass any expiration period set elsewhere.
