i got a pc that has xp pro installed. when i first booted it up everything was fine, but now when it tries to load a certain driver.... agp404, i think ... the pc reboots and goes to the "windows did not start correctly" screen.

i've tried booting up in every safe mode, debugging mode, drs or dsr(which ever it is), boot log... everyway possible. is there a file i can edit or another way of making sure this driver does not load... and crash the system again, i know very little about the way xp runs. tia

thats great and all but, I have no xp cd. the machine is an old box a friend was getting rid of and i guess he had already sold all his software, i got the pc for $15 so i'm not complaining too much, i just didnt want to refo' and put 98 in. i do have an xp home upgrade disc, and a HP utils disk - but those seem to be pretty much useless.

any other ideas? i can access the drive with the ntfsdos through my hp utils, is there anyway of disabling this agp440.sys that way?

The upgrade cd is the FULL OS, try it first and then post back.

What about selecting Last known good configuration in Safe Mode?

Not sure whether Charles' Idea of using your home disc on a Pro install will work to get to any of the diagnostics. I've never tried. Might work though?

    stealth2,

Other options, if system doesn't accept the Home cd for this purpose:

Borrow Pro cd, or buy one or install the Home OS instead of 98. As I wrote, "upgrade" cd's are the full OS. If installed as clean, you'll be asked for "proof" that you currently have a "valid" MS OS installation - you have that in the form of a 98 disc.

You can't keep running like this w/o inconvience and trouble not having a cd for pro anyway - just ran into that.

    Regards - Charles
