Help! I have just switched to XP Pro on a new (to me) computer system. The Backup Utility Wizard for some reason thinks I want to use it every time I left-click a drive; I can only avoid it by remembering to right-click. I have searched everywhere in Windows and online for info on how to get rid of it, but no luck. This never happened to the guy who owned the computer before me, who I guess never used and never saw the BUW.

I guess I would be happy to disable it entirely if I have to, but I can't find out how to do that, either. And I'm worried that it is part of the system restore process, which I certainly wouldn't want to disable.

So I thought maybe it would leave me alone if I either (1) set up a backup job, so it realized that I knew what backing up was, or (2) didn't set up any backup job, so I could evade its notice entirely. Neither seems to work, although I now can't find a way to view and delete the simple backup job I set up under hypothesis (1).

Any ideas for getting rid of the pushy Backup Utility Wizard, and secondarily, viewing and deleting backup jobs?

That could possibly be a manifestation of the problem that causes the Search tool to open when a folder is opened.

The cure for that is to apply one of the following fixes:

    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_folder_open.htm

As an alternate to the above fix, you can go to Start >Run and type:

    regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

Press enter. The effect is immediate with no reboot required.

FYI, This quirk is most often caused by opening Explorer or My Computer and clicking on the Tools > Folder Options > File Types > File Folder and selecting "Advanced" then clicking OK instead of Cancel. Even though you have only looked and made no changes, changes will nevertheless be made IF you have selected "Advanced" and IF you then click OK. To avoid this, always click "Cancel" when you don't intend to change things.

If this isn't specific to your problem, it won't cause any ill effects if you apply it. Chicken soup.

    eliminate Backup Wizard popup

    Hi Surferdude2,

Thanks! I tried the regsvr32 /i shell32.dll method and it worked instantly. You're a lifesaver. & thanks for the tip about clicking "cancel" & not "OK. "

Do you have any ideas for viewing and deleting backup jobs &/or changing their details?

If you're referring to NTbackup that MS supplies, I wouldn't know any real specifics. I choose to use other methods since the MS version is, in my opinion, awkward and disappointing. I assume you can delete any backups that you make by looking within the program. You will not be able to make any changes to an existing backup other than restoring any/all items from or deleting it completely.

If you meant some other backup system, such as disk imaging or cloning, I might be able to enlighten you there.
