Anyone have any idea why it takes XP soooo long to populate a list?

I do web sites with a large amount of JPG images and it seems to take forever for XP to populate the directory with the images.

Is XP building thumbnails, and if so any ideas on how to stop it?

If you turn of indexing it should go some faster.

AFAIK, if the view for the folder is set to thumbnails it can take a while to display new pictures but if set to list, details, whatever, it should be pretty much instant (absent the overhead from indexing). And once the thumbs.db is populated, even thumbnails should display fairly quickly until you add a bunch of new ones.

OTOH, I haven't tried this with a folder containing thousands of images so can't say how it would work then.

And I suspect that the thumbnail speed may be related to the picture viewer you are using as your default. I'm using IrfanView so the above behavior is based on that.

Thanx Newt, that did it. Sorry for the delay in response, had the urge to dangle my feet in the Caribbean for a few days.

LOL - first things first and a nice dunk in that water certainly should be first.
