    Hello all,

Just recently, my WIN XP pro has suddenly decided not to detect my DVD drives. I have a Pioneer DVD-ROM drive and a Sony DVD+-RW drive that use to work perfectly until today.

I tried to reinstall the drivers in both normal and safe mode but I keep getting the following message:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) "

The only thing else I can think of doing is reformatting, and I really don't want to do that. Can anyone suggest a possible solution to my problem? I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks
    Ramsin

Hi Ramsin - Welcome to the Board :)

Put any thoughts of a reformat to one side for the moment - that is the last resort and not to be undertaken lightly.

    First off try this ......

Go to Device Manager and remove the two drives.

Shut down the PC and remove the ribbon cables to the two drives.

    Reboot and shut down

Reconnect the drives - check the connections at both ends of the cable - for good measure unplug the cables from the mobo and plug them in again.

Reboot - Windows should detect the two drives and load the drivers. Generally speaking there are no dedicated drivers for these devices - unless your manuals say different.

If this fails to get them up and running post back.

BTW did you do anything to the PC immediately prior to the drives ceasing to work - new software, cleaned the registry, ...???

Have you a System Restore point prior to this problem ?

    Hello,

Thanks for your quick response, it is much appreciated. I tried everything that you suggested, but unfortunately, after I reconnected the drives and rebooted, XP still gave me the same message:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) "

There is nothing that I can think of that would cause this problem. Prior to this happening I was using the computer like I always do. Im a graphic artist and generally run software such as photoshop, premiere, flash, etc. I also burn my personal films on DVD and watch DVD movies. Thats just about all I do.

If there is any other suggestions you can offer I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks again :)

    Ramsin

Paste this without the quotes into Google - there are plenty of hits which look relevant:

" Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) "
