    XP-home or XP-pro?

    FAT32 or NTFS?

Network or single, stand alone PC?

    If networked, workgroups or domain?

The exact way to do what you want will be different depending on answers to the above.

    1. start~run~cmd to open a "DOS" window and then convert x: /fs:ntfs (where "X" means any drive) to change your file system to NTFS. Lots more security options then. You should convert any drives/partitions you really want to secure.
    2. Disable the Guest account
    3. Create an account on your PC to exactly match the username & password for each other PC on the network. Then disable all those accounts.
    4. Change the administrator account on your PC to something only you will know.
    5. Read HOW TO: Set, View, Change, or Remove File and Folder Permissions in Windows XP.

z4u - there were occasional problems with convert in Win2K from what I read. Very rare but they did happen.

I have not read of anyone having problems with XP. I know it was painless when I did it to my PCs at home and my guess is that Microsoft improved the utility for XP. Different version of NTFS than Win2K has too - 5.1 vs 5.0.

Other than having additional security options and additional chkdsk options after you've done the conversion, you shouldn't notice any real difference on your PC. The data isn't being touched - just the way file information is stored.

That being said, it would still be a good idea to make copies to CD or similar of any personal information you value. Address book(s), favorites, documents, pictures, and that sort of thing.

A power failure during the conversion or similar very bad luck isn't likely but could happen.
