This may be a dumb question, but how (where) do I find the IP address of my laptop?

I eventually networked it with my desktop PC with the Wizard, but it took many attempts to get it right. Finally I discovered that Zone Alarm was the problem!!

With Zone Alarm turned off all appears to work fine - or well enough for what I want - essentially file transfer. XP Firewall and ICS are also turned off as I have a modem in each PC.

Reading the (free) Zone Alarm help on networks it would appear that I have to put each computer in the trusted zone - for that I need the IP address of each computer, but where do I find these?? Or is there another way?

I am VERY much a novice with networking - this is my first brush with it, so simple answers please!

    TIA

Pete - to find out the IP address of your PC

    start~run~cmd and then
    ipconfig

    or to get more detail
    ipconfig /all

I ran ipconfig/all on both PCs. this gives me the IP address of the Ethenet adaptor in the Laptop and the Ethernet Bridge on the PC. These are already in the trusted zone of Zone Alarm.

I wonder if I need to load some networking components over and above those which XP installs by default?

    IPconfig on the PC gives:
Host Name - correct computer name inserted here
    Primary Dns suffix is blank
    Node type is unknown
    IP Routing enabled - No
    WINS Proxy enabled - No

Laptop is the same, but Node is Mixed.

As I said in the first post he network runs fine provided that Zone Alarm is turned off on both PCs. Incidentally I read somewhere on MS Knowledge Base that network will not run with firewalls, yet the Network Wizard sets up the XP Firewall by default!!

I am way deep in over my head here ! - any further help much appreciated

    Newt,

    Problem solved :) :)

Realised sometime today that as the only IP address given by ipconfig was that of the Ethernet card, this must be the IP address of the PC on the network. Entered the details into Zone Alarm for Trusted Zone and everything worked!

Without ipconfig I would have been totally lost.

Many thanks - the help of guys like you is really appreciated.

May the bugs keep on flying!!

    Glad you got it Pete.

And Yup. The only IP and MAC address(es) the PC will have is that of the NIC(s).
