To:Abraxas, Daizy, Carameah, and others that assisted me with the XP computer that would not load certain URL's.

The manufactor, as a final "hope" had me to reformat the PC. Sure, I lost everything but was willing to get things going right again.

Failure. After doing the above, the Guest PC refuses to load some URL's, while most will load just fine. So that several hours was wasted.

Called the manufactor again today and they said that my Security Settings with my ISP must be wrong, I think they are still guessing. I have not changed anything (I don't know how!) to make something quit working.

Summary: Some weeks ago the Guest PC on our HomeNewWorking failed to load some Web Pages. Have found 4 so far. The Host PC does them all.

I have Repaired, Reinstall and Reformatted; changed registry settings as directed, turned off my firewall, etc., anything I was asked to do.

I'm stuck in this ditch and don't know how to get out. Any suggestions from anyone.

You have certainly been through the mill. Very strange, indeed.
It appears that other people are having a similar problem in some other forums (fora?), but no solutions that I have seen.
How could it be your ISP if the other computer works OK? They are trying everything, but who can blame them?

It needs to be some minor aspect of your network. Hopefully, we'll find it  .

I may have found something to help.

The concensus seems to be that the problem lies with the MTU. The fix I found is pasted below. However, it doesn't say which machine to do this registry hack on...host or client. I leave it to you to figure that part out. ;)

"I'm running W2K, but the registry key should be the same.....

Run regedit and go to the key listed below:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces

Now go to the key below this one where EnableDHCP = 1, and in this folder add a new DWORD value, MTU = 1450.

Reboot or better yet disable/enabled that interface, and you should be all set! "

    Found it
Here . (scroll down to see the message quoted above).

Thank you for that information. Please notice that I am a "Beginner," really a beginning Beginner. I have learned my way around the Registry and can change things. I don't know how to -add- as your post said.

Would you or someone walk me through that? I'm willing to try anything.

    start~run~regedt32

drill down to the indicated Interfaces location by clicking on the plus signs until you are there

the folder(s) below interfaces probably won't have subfolders but can be opened by a left-click on the folder. You should then see a list of names in the right-hand pane.

At the top, click on edit~new~DWORD Value

Name the new item on the right MTU. Then edit~modify and change the "value data" to 1450. The reference doesn't specify so start by leaving it at the default of hexidecimal. You can always go back in and make it a decimal value if you need to.

A couple of notes on things not spelled out in the article:

There will probably be lots of other entries in the folder besides the EnableDHCP= entry. No problem. Leave them alone.

You will be adding a new value. When you put it in, it will be at the bottom. After the reboot, it will be alphabetical among the values there. Normal behavior.

    Appreciate that.

Don't know if you know the crux of my problem. If you have read it you know about the non-connecting Web Pages on the Client PC.

Well just now I removed the networking cable, created a dialup connection on the Client PC, went on line and it works perfectly, just as it did once.

That should leave the Host with the problem.

The instruction you gave me about are for the Host PC, right? The Client was just proven to be OK, I think.

Maybe the Client is the one I'm supposed to change the Registry setting!!!!!!!

Would you clear that up for me?

Sorry Mudd but I have never used ICS. Wouldn't touch it with a touching machine. I use a LinkSys router/switch that is probably the best $90 I have ever spent.

Among other things, it talks to my ISP and routes all traffic to the proper PC at the house. It also runs my home network.

And FWIW, I am an NT network administrator by trade so I could do the stuff at home by hand but really much prefer the router switch.

Thanks for the information that you did provide. Think I will try one then the other. If neither works, I can always change it back.

There is so much to learn and I'm too old with so little time.
