YESTERDAY i shut this XP "puter properly....today on 'boot-up" , half my desktop icons came up Black. The only way i know to solve this is to "pull the plug ".which you will tell me not to do.

If anyone has a solution, please advise.

Please do not tell me that "xp is the best they ever built.

There are more threads here about XP which is 2 years old, than 98 which is 5-6 years old.
it is interesting that MSFT will spend millions for rewards to find a virus hacker, but not a dime to make it hacker proof.

Why are you so angry at Microsoft and XP? Your computer is a tad more complicated than your coffeepot. If you do a search on the BBS, you will find a number of references to repairing icons. A simple System Restore might do the trick.

Take a deep breath and use your energy to look for solutions, not to cast blame for problems.

    XP & Microsoft

Why should i HAVE to do a System Restore when it has worked o.k. for a month
i do not use a coffeepot.
MSFT thinking is similar to a car manucacturer, they pinch pennies on
production, then do "Free warranty work at $50-$60 per hour for 70,000-100,000 miles
you did not comment on the number of threads ~~~~~~as compared to 98 " " "Sure, XP is more popular " " "

XP is radically different than the older versions of Windows. We're all learning it, even those of us who have been using it for close to 2 years now. I have never called MS tech support, so I can't comment on their customer service.

Have you fixed your icon problem yet?

    Hi Mike!

I will do a search on this forum to see if I can confirm my advice before posting it to You. It has been discussed before.

Okey, I won´t tell You that I think that XP Pro (know too little about XP Home) is very good and outperforms Win98 and WinME by far ...... :D ......

This version of Windows BBS came into being in late december 2001 so it´s actually younger than XP. All earlier threads were lost with the previous version of Windows BBS, a lot of them probably pertaining to Win98!
The reason for the differing number of posts to the different forums on the current Windows BBS is probably that most questions have already been asked for Win98 and new users are finding things out about WinXP.

    Regards,
    Christer

Besause #1 it just might fix things.

Mine worked just fine two days ago ( and had for days ). But. I had to do a System Restore the next morning BECAUSE I MESSED up the night before.

LOL Are you sure about that???

Not for me. It took me three trys last night to get the time & Timer set on ours so that my Wife would have her coffee ready when she got up this AM. ( we had a power outage yesterday ) The Computer(s) recovered. The Coffee Pot did not.

That is the way I hear things too. Pro is better.

I do not see it as being any better than 98SE. But that is me ( as the user ) and not XP.

I did a search for IconCache on the Windows XP forum. Have a read and see if there´s a fix for Your problem.

A recently mentioned remedy was to simply change the screen colours from the standard blue (or from whichever is used) to another one, reboot, change back and reboot.

    Hello MIR11,

You mentioned that this was a OEM with XP pre-installed.

Have you done any investigations into the OEM loaded software? Do you need/use them? What have you installed on top of them? How about MS updates - how do you do them auto/manual?

What I'm trying to get at here is what's the pattern and are you mindfull of the effects of any changes to the system.

    Regards - Charles

to Charlesvar, it really is not a big deal. Yes i am aware of if you add other software, it can affect it.

to BillyBob, i have 2 "puters, and 2 printers (one a Seikosha Dot Matrix that works well.) for various uses.
i CAN NOT PUT 98 ON DSL, there is no way of connecting it.~~~
that is why/how i got new machine.

My point was/is i do not believe (for my usage) that XP is any better ,or more dependable than 95 or 98 was/is for my usage

If i were MSFT, i would do like VW did with the old Beetle, make changes as needed to improve the "vehicle" for a longer time, rather than a new model every or two.

I will not stand firm on this but I think there is a way . I am not 100% sure but I believe all it would take is a Network Card to be installed. And removal of any Internal Modem.

If all goes well 30 minutes tops to do. But again I am only thinking there.

Well my Fellow Member, If you wish to put it that way I do fully agree. In fact I am back on my 98SE HD right now. It is FASTER & SMOOTHER.

If you want a good solid 98 then get 98SE. It is better then 98 itself.

After reading about your ICONs problem, I decided to fire you a line about profiles...Windows profiles sometimes become corrupt...log on as the root administrator (the account you first setup during your original install) and see if the administrator ICONs appear...if they do, it's possible your profile has become corrupt...go into the User Accounts file and delete it...log on again and you should see some ICONs after you profile is recreated...after you get your desktop set back up the way you like it, run the File and Settings Transfer Wizard to create a backup copy of your settings in case this happens again...you might also want to run the one for Office (Save my Settings in tools) to backup a copy of your Office settings...let me know if this works for you...

Or download TweakUI and use the "repair icon" function.

Exactly right on the network card. DSL will do fine with 98SE - also with FE as far as I know. Don't see why it wouldn't because you can certainly network the OS and thats basically what you are doing with broadband to the internet.

Usually you can leave the modem in case you want to use faxing or something.

MIR11 - if you do want to network the two PCs you have now and get DSL connections for both as well as connectivity between the two PCs to share files and printers, post to the networking section.

There is no place in this Compaq 2200 to attach/install a network card~ a knowedgeable technician took the cover off and laughed...
    i actually have 98SE.
This "puter and my wife's are actually networked on DSL. our ISP Bellsouth allows 1200 min. per month(avg. 40 min. per day ) dial~up for 'emergencies "
my 98SE 'puter has Word, Excel,PowerPoint and other programs which i can not put in here, mostly because the software is "missing "
