I cloned my current hd to a larger hd with Ghost 2003, then installed the larger hd into c position, and checked that it would boot, and all ok. I then formatted the original hd, and packed it away. The next time I attempted to boot XP, I got as far as the login screen, and the system locked up. I have attempted to boot the system half a dozen times , but it still looks up on the login page. Any ideas please.

    Regards

Try booting in safe mode, I think its F8, and see if it goes.

    Chuck,
Same problem in safe mode. I managed, with the help of a 98 boot disk, to load smartdrv, get to setup, and to the recovery consul. In the repair option, the system says my password is incorrect, and does not let me go any further. So again, it looks like there is a problem in the login area. Where can I go from here.

Did it boot all the way into windows the first time you checked it?
Did you set the boot partition on the new drive as active? Can you use the ghost boot disk and check that?

I then formatted the original hd, and packed it away.

The original hard drive is not connected now?

What important information do you have on the unbootable hard drive?
Is the jumper set to master or slave?

If you have some important files that you don't want to lose here is an option I might explore.....

    1. In the BIOS set the CD-ROM as the bootable drive...with the floppy next..and finally the hard drive.

    2. Disconnect new drive.

    3. Take your original drive , set to master using the jumper , and install a fresh copy of windows XP on it.

    4. Take the new drive and connect it as slave using jumper.

    5. Boot the computer on original drive and get all the important files on the new drive, using windows explorer, and copy to old drive.

    6. Disconnect the old drive and set as slave.

    7. Connect new drive, set it as master, and install a fresh copy of windows on it.

    8. Reconnect old drive as slave and get all your important files and copy to new drive.
