Do you mean that the old hard drive was replaced or that the new drive was added as a second drive?

If the old hard drive was replaced how did your friend load XP and did he/she also load the chipset drivers?

Was XP installed on your drive while it was in your computer or in another?

Since XP may only be installed to one computer from one CD if your friend used an XP CD which had already been installed on another computer you will be unable to activate it. If the XP CD was unused you need that CD, not your Recovery disks.
