    Hi

I have a laptop running XP Pro with a local profile configured.

I built a win2k server as a primary domain controller.

Now, when I logon to the domain from the laptop, it creates a new profile on the laptop. So far what I have looks like this:

    user1
    user1.domain

what i want is to use the user1 profile settings wether I'm logged on to the domain or not. I also want to sync the two profiles.

    what I've tried so far:

    System Properties -- Advanced Tab
    User Profiles -- Settings
    select Local\user1 -- Copy to
browse to user1.domain folder and click ok

at this point, I've tried 2 methods:

    1. just click ok, and begin the "copy to "...
    and
    2. under Permitted to use, clicked Change, then used the Advanced tab to locate the user1.domain RDN...

both of these message cause the "Copy to" operation to quit responding.

I've also tried to manually copy the entire user1 profile into the user1.domain profile, but this doesn't work right either. (must have something to do with the NTUSER.DAT file)

Am I even in the right ballpark?

    Thanks for the help

I think the simplest option would be to have a Group Policy setting Only allow local user profiles for the laptop so you will just have the one profile to deal with.

Cant you just log on to the domain profile all the time weather you are hooked to the DC or not? That's what I do.
Just log on as local administrator and copy all of the contents of C:\documentsandsettings\user to C:\DocumentsAndSettings\user.domain.
Make sure no files are hidden and make sure your not logged on as one of the users you are copying.

    thanks Newt

I'm not familiar with group policies but I found enough info in the help files to get me through.

    wish me luck

    thanks Smith

your idea was what I originally planned on doing, but I had already configured the local profile, and didn't want to redo the whole thing.

its one of those "I'll be damned if I can't figure a way around this" type things that turns into a major conquest. but, i guess if you learn something from it, it only makes you wiser
