Is there any KNOWN CONFLICTS running Windows XP-Home Edition with Intel Celeron processors?

When I moved from W98 to XP on my old HP PC, which had a 433Mhz Celeron CPU I noticed the HD activity light on the front panel continued to blink at a rate of aprox. once/second.

Thinking that XP and the much larger HD I had installed was forcing the obsolete CMOS/BIOS, motherboard and CPU to do more than they were designed to do. I built a complete new system from scratch.

With the Asus P4S8X-X MB, Intel Celeron 2Ghz CPU running Win. XP, I have the same problem. If I boot from a DOS disk... the blinking goes away.

Does the blinking HD indicator mean anything?
Does it disturb or harm my HD in any way?

Excessive file FRAGMENTATION has been a problem with my old PC and the new one running Win. XP.

My engineer friend who helped me build the new PC has almost the same setup as mine except he spent the extra $$ to get a full-blown Pentium CPU. His system does NOT have this problem.

Full Pentium 4s have a larger cache. How much RAM and what are applications are you using? Some have to seek out the hard drive more. Are things otherwise running OK?

    Hi Quarterpounder

Could this simply be the disk indexing service just doing its thing?
My desktop was doing similar until I disabled the service.

For what it may be worth my HP laptop is Celeron based and runs XP Pro quite smoothly. :)

I totally agree with kiwicolin re. Indexing service - turn it off!
