I am trying to install WindowsXP Professional Edition onto my computer. The motherboard is a ABit Kt7E with Duron 800 processor, 384 megs of ram with hp cd-writer 8200+. Right now it is running Windows 2000 pro. I have tried installing 2 different versions of XP and they both do the same thing:
After the installation files are copied the initial boot takes place. It restarts and gets to the black WindowsXP screen with the scrolling "activity bar." Then the screen flickers and my computer reboots. However, it locks up at the video card information screen. Needless to say it is impossible for me to complete the installation. PLEASE let me know what is going on. I am NOT happy with Windows 2000 and would like an operating system that is as stable as XP is supposed to be. Thank you very much.
PS, I already flashed my bios to the newest version.

    xp installation

I don't know if this will help, but I have installed xp pro on two different pc's with no problem, both installations were on a clean HD, one a 40 gig, the other 18 gig. I first installed 98se and as soon as the installation was complete I put in the xp cd and did a upgrade. I know this means you have to reinstall all your programs, but the installation went along OK. Both pc's use Abit boards. Hope this will help.

What Video card do you have ?

    I had a similiar problem:
    AMD Athlon 1.2, 256Ram, Geforce2MX 100/200 32MB video
    (was WIN ME)

It would not boot after instillation of XP Home. After several different try's, and calling MS, it was my video card causing it. The Geforce2 IS suported by XP, but will cause a stop during instillation.
Luckily, I had another computer, and I used that card for setup. Once done, I shutdown, swapped the cards again, re-started. XP found the Geforce card with no problem, and even installed "signed" drivers for it from the CD.

    Hope this helps.

THANK YOU!!! I have a Geforce card, I had suspected that problem as well. I will trying upgrading the bios, and if that doesn't work then trying the swap method.
