Help, Please: Windows XP Home edition. attempting to install, get error message:" Video card has conflict with motherboard, installation will not continue. "

Running Soyo K7VTA Pro board with NVida GEForce2 MX 100/200 card. latest NVida drivers, supposedly compatible with XP, but not the specific XP drivers. Athalon 1000mhz, 756mb memory, Windows 98SE.

So, I call Microsoft XP installation support, their ansewer is to remove video card & replace with "some other card" install XP, then re-install NVida card, and it "will work fine." I just happen to have another video card (can't remember what, it's up in the garage), two problems, 1. running a TFT monitor, digital connector cable, no way to connect it to other video card unless I can find some kind of adapter, so I got to find another monitor to do this. 2. Seems like a strange way to solve the problem.

I emailed Soyo two weeks ago to see if they have some answers,so far no response.

    try this

This worked for me. When you get that error mess reboot & press F8. Now select VGA only. This loads into plain vanila vid card driver:) Oooooops forgot! Now after the install finishes, install new vid card drivers.

Thanks, Rancher-- I'm going to give it a try, just got to get my courage up again. I have so many programs that won't work under XP and perifials that I'm going to have to update or get new drivers for that just the amount of effort its going to take makes me keep stalling. I got 98SE and it has been working like its supposed to. With two hard drives installed, I'm going to try to figure out how to set up dual boot so installing XP won't be so scary.

Thanks Newt, you know, I've read that KB article, still have qualms about XP installation. I think what I'll do for now is pull drive C out and let D become C and do a clean install of XP (if I can overcome the video card problem), then stick old C back in as slave. What do you guys think of this strategy? Think it'll work as a dual boot? Is there a better way?

Next question, If I install XP drivers for hardware: printer, scanner, Digital camera, flash card reader, will they continue to work for 98SE when booted as OS? Will 98SE retain old drivers? In other words, what kind of problems am I creating by doing this

I strongly suggest doing the way the article recommended. I'm just too darned lazy to look it up right now but I know with Win2000 (which is very similar to XP) you needed to put the 9x install in first 'cause if you did the 2K first, you just about couldn't get 9x to ever work.

With a dual-boot setup, each OS maintains it's own set of drivers that are used when it starts. The others are not seen by the system at boot time and the hardware doesn't retain driver information thru a reboot.
