Hi im trying to install xp on a new machine I have done the msdos part e:\i386\winnt.exe and it restarted that took ages! Then after it has restarted it has loaded all the drivers then it is still on the blue screen with the white bar at the bottom displaying a message on the left of the bar saying setup is starting windows and it doesnt seem to be going any further, there is no sign of the red light that indicates it doing something its just sitting there any ideas?

NEC Powermate, Pentium 4, 1.5GHZ, 256mb DDR ram..

    Regards

    Cooly

To install XP just change your boot order in the BIOS to look for your cd first, and setup is (mostly) automated from there. Clean install of XP

If and when installing XP or Win2k via DOS, you need to load a program called SMARTDRV.exe that will speed things up....

How long has it been stuck where it is? If under thirty minutes, I'd let it go a while longer..

    re

Its being doing it for more than an hour, I cant get to a dos prompt to run any other program because now it just comes up with go back to c:\ which i cant cos nothing there apart from a boot program or install/upgrade to windows xp. When i boot from disc sequence from bios it does exactly the same thing loads the drivers then back to the same posistion again saying setup is starting windows.

    Coolwaters,
Please don't be offended, but if your cd won't boot your computer for an XP install then either MS needs to replace a defective cd or you could possibly have a pirated disk. Posting Rule #6 forbids us to explain how to circumvent copy protection and licensing. If you could explain WHY you need to install XP from a DOS prompt, perhaps we could be more helpful. You also need to tell us Home or Pro, upgrade or retail or OEM recovery disks, that kind of thing, so that we can rule out possibilities.

Could be that the boot secter on the hard drive is the problem. I know that Western digital put out some 40 gig that had this problem. try the hard drives diagnostics disk or try a new drive this is sounds like the problem
