alright I looked thru the posts and I haven't seen this one, My computer a compaq 4410 CA running windows xp home edition. It will boot to the xp logo screen .. then restarts, I did F8 tried all the options lol... none worked except disabling the restart when errors occur.. i got this message after rebooting again. windows could not start error C0000135 winsrv file missing reinstalling this application may fix it .

Well booted the comp with the xp boot disks I downloaded from microsoft, using these to get into recovery console.. now what?
there is not much on this subject besides, reinstall xp. only problem with that is I'm still waiting on new system recovery disks from Compaq as they were comprimised when my system got sasser ( not much luck with this darn comp lol ) I had been told to download the dll file, and use the copy command in recovery console? only how would I type that command, and to what system file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

    RBauer, Welcome Aboard.
That error means the 'winsrv.dat' or 'winsrv.dll' file is missing or
corrupt in the Windows\System32 folder, or more likely that
    your registry was corrupted.

See How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install:

    Hope this helps.

Have you tried a System Recovery from the Hard Drive. Most newer computers store system information on the Hard Drive these days. On my system I can do a non-destructive restore of Windows XP by hitting F10 when the system is starting up. You also mention F8. I assume you tried the option of starting the system from the last known working restore.

RBauer, I re-read your Post and now I think I understand more fully the situation. I've worked on several Compaq Machines in the past and I know about their system recovery disks, and some of the problems involved.

So my suggestions would be: 1)Wait until Compaq sends you New Recovery Disks. or 2) Try the MS Knowledge Base Article on "How to Install and Use Recovery Console" http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;307654

All the necessary Recovery Console Commands are listed here.
