    Hi everyone!

Just a quickie problem for all of you here. It's a "no idea" problem for me.

My neighbor, Al, calls me. He has a Compaq Presario, model 5WV296.

His Compaq came out of the box with ME and a 2-partition HD. He then added a Western Digital HD and partitioned it into 2 30 Gig units, successfully and long ago.

Okay....so he goes and installs a completely legit XP Home Upgrade and everything is tickety-boo except for one big problem.

The upgraded OS doesn't see the added HD....both partitions not there in Windows Explorer.

He removes the upgrade and everything is fine again.

I told him I'd post it to here and that someone here definitely knows what the hitch is. ;)

Can you please help us with this???

Also, to the moderators, I am sorry if this thread should have been started elsewhere. (Hardware, ME, ?????) I just thought that since this was an issue that an XP Home upgrade caused, that I should post it here first.

    Thanx in advance,
    Randy

First off - I'd be really leary of upgrading from ME to anything. Well known to cause a variety of strange problems. It is for sure not an upgrade I would either try or recommend.

Next - with XP-home loaded, check in Disk Management and see how the drive status is listed. Probably possible to fix things from there.

Right-click My Computer then manage~disk management

    Newt,

What did I say? The answers are ALWAYS here. ;)

Okay......as it stands, the PC is being defragged right at the moment. Some time in the near future, he will reinstall the upgrade and we will tell you what's in Disk Management, okay?

I never did have much use for ME but, yet, some swear by it and all is well for them. For me, I don't swear by it, I swear at it. :D

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Thanx again and I shall, hopefully, return to post back.

    Randy

    XP over ME

    YUCK !!!!!

    Gotta go with Newt here.

That is a procedure that even I would not suggest let alone recommend.

And also an OEM ( Compaq ) unit is being dealt with. It may very well contain propretory hardware that XP may not even know what to do with.

    XP over ME.

XP did not see the 2nd HD.

I just happed to have a thought cross my mind.

How about Disk Management maybe causing the problem ?

If I remember correctly ME has somewhat the same DM.

And maybe XP just could not overcome it ?

If that is the case then I do not think a 2nd try will do any better.

    Thanx a lot, guys!

You two are just too much, you know that? WOW!

Okay, so maybe we shall just not apply the Upgrade again and stop shooting ourselves in the foot with it.

My neighbor is actually following this thread as well. He hasn't actively participated on any boards, to my knowledge, but I would think that this should convince him that running a PC without being a member at Windows-Help is really scary and silly.

I shudder to think what I would do without all of you here.

Everyone here is appreciated more than you will ever know.

Alas....why can't the various world governments take a look at us here and learn something. Harmony and good will to your fellow man is the answer. Conflict goes nowhere on this board and nowhere in real life either. :(

    Randy the Canuck :D

To wrap up my end of this thread:

Thanx a lot, again, for your input.

My neighbor has decided to take the software back to where he purchased it and demand a refund. Knowing the store, I imagine he'll be okay. He says they can either refund him the coin or upgrade the system "paint by numbers' like the upgrade is supposed to be like.

He's heard of possible BIOS tricks and what-not for advice but says the bottom line is that he is disgusted with the whole thing and doesn't want to go through it again when it comes time for a system restore some day.

H'e not blaming Compaq and he's not blaming MS. The jury may never be back with a verdict on this one. He's just dismayed at this being the result of "trying to keep up with the times" by getting into XP a bit.

He knows, all too well, how slick XP Pro runs on my PC and many others as well. It's just that his Compaq came with ME which has been good to him so far and so he's staying put, until another machine will be absolutely required some day.

    There you have it, folks.

I strongly encourage everyone to do what I did and always post back. It's the only way these fine folks on this forum will ever know what became of your problem.

Trust me....I know all too well how much everyone here cares. All they ask is a little bit back from us. ;)

    Gratefully,
    Randy

    Thanks for posting back Randy.

I think him opting for an OS that runs well for him and has a high comfort level is a good idea.
