I recently had to re-install XP Home on my Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop after some corrupted files led to the BSOD and failure to boot and System Restore would not work. I did a re-install as opposed to a clean install.

The system boots just fine now with one exception: it seems to spend an inordinate (45 sec) amount of time on the black screen with the XP logo and the blue progress bar that appears just before the "Welcome" screen. Total time from power on to the Desktop is 90 sec to 2 min. Before the re-install the time from power on to Desktop was about 45 sec. I've been unable to find a "fix" for this particular problem listed in MS KB or by 'Googling" the problem.

Thisd is more of an annoyance than anything else, but the re-install has clearly changed something. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Search for threads - slow boot.

Many things have already been discussed there. If it still does not work out, we would take it from there.

Wow! After reading some of the accounts I found when I did the search you recommended my problem seems pretty minor. Some of the boot times others report are unbelieveable. I couln't find anything, however, that seemed to deal with my particular issue. Can you tell me what exactly XP is doing during that period when the black screen with the XP logo and the blue progress bar is displayed?

Loading the OS, device drivers and drivers for applications, starting applications.

Did you check the application startups and whether needed or not at bootup? http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425

A great many applications insert themselves into the startup when there is really no need to. Examples: obviously applications such as anti viruses, firewalls are needed. Such things as updates for media software of one type or another is really not needed and wasting time.
