have formatted C drive and installed XP Home. System boots to XP start up page and then the monitor goes on to standby. Any clues?

Hi Ron - welcome to the board :)

Could well be a video card problem - check that the card is properly seated and that all connections are OK inside the case.

    Pete,

Thanks, checked the card, no problems there. I get to the XP welcomne screen and just when I expect the user logon screen to appear nothing happens. WHen I restart the system runs scandisk and then gets to the same stage and stops.

    Ron,

As this is a new install of XP and it sounds like you can't get into it at all I would suggest that you do a completely clean install again.

Check in the BIOS and set the boot order to CD/Floppy/Hard Drive.

Boot from the XP cd - opt to re-install to the existing XP partition - XP will protest - insist and then take up the offer to format the drive - select full format - not quick format. Setup will proceed automatically.

This step by step tutorial may be of some interest, although it does not mention the point I made above.
