Whenever I go to do a defrag, I always do so via safe mode. I'm having a situation, however, that I hope someone here can offer a fix for.

When I choose to go into safe mode after hitting F8, the needed files load up but then my system hangs for a few minutes before finally going into safe mode where I can work. I can see the system files loading in on the screen, and that will stay up there for a good few minutes before I can get in.

Why is this hanging up like it is? I have a laptop with pretty much the same setup as my desktop and it goes right into safe mode when chosen.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I also get a good few minute hang AFTER defragging and going to reboot.

    Only some checks and maybes.

Look in Device Manager in Safe Mode if any problems are listed.

Run CheckDisk (see Help and Support).

If you have upgraded to SP2, find the latest drivers for your basic hardware, like the motherboard/chipset drivers and the graphics drivers (and even keyboard and mouse).

I wouldn't bother going into safe mode in the first place.

But, if you have any usb devices plugged in, you should try unplugging them and see if it helps.
