    Hello all

Arie I know you must likely know this one, I use to have a paper on removing/deleting a windows file that would then after the next boot would rescan for all the hardware on the system. I used it at the time for when I had to switch a hardrive to a newer system.

Also does Vista and Win7 use the same hardware file? So I can use the same process?

Also what commands can I use to repair a non booting system upon say booting from a CD or boot disk.

Also what is in fact the best repair manual you can buy for windows OS systems.

    Thanks

    Greg

    Question #1

    Control Panel->System Icon->Hardware tab->Device Manager

Click on the Computer Name then click on ACTION->Scan for Hardware Changes

    Hello

No, alot of times after you have installed the hardrive out of a differant computer upon boot the system locks up being it is looking for the hardware that was in the other/older computer.

I'm looking for the file name in the registry that holds the old computer system hardware that you can delete so once you boot it scans for all the new hardware that you have switched to in the new computer.

I wish I had better book keeping skills I'd still have the facts.

    Thanks

    Greg

In Device Manager - you can uninstall a device.....shut pc down to add new hardware....turn pc back on.

    Hello Steve

As I said though at times when you install a hardrive from another computer you never get to the desktop being the os as it loads is looking for the hardware from the old computer and I have seen maybe 4 or 5 times it just locks up or blue screen of death.

    Thank

OK...now I see the part about hard drive from one pc to another. (i'd never do that but it does happen)

You basically have to do a Repair install. The following article is close:
